The Eight Parts of Speech

Words are used to form patterns of English grammar and syntax. 每一个 word falls into one of eight categories referred to as parts of speech. Here are the eight commonly recognized parts of speech.

1. Noun
A word which is a person, place, thing or idea. Nouns can be countable or uncountable.
E. g. : Mount Everest, book, horse, Prakash, strength, car, Taj Mahal, China, house, child

2. Pronoun
A word that is used to take the place of a noun. There are a number of pronouns such as subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive and demonstrative pronouns.
E. g. : I, they, their, ourselves, itself, your, 我的, nobody, who, which, her, we

3. Adjective
A word that is used to describe a noun or pronoun. There are various types of adjectives which can be studied in more depth on the adjective page.
E. g. : proud, purple, French, few, this, huge, sad, second, none

4. Verb
A word that indicates an action, being or state of being.
E. g. : play, run, think, study, smell, wait, be, drive, renounce, fill

5. Adverb
A word that is used to describe a verb which tells how, where, or when something is done.
E. g. : carefully, often, very, intelligently, quite, too, rarely, never

6. Conjunction
A word that is used to join words or groups of words. Conjunctions are used to connect two sentences into one more complex sentence.
E. g. : and, or, but, neither, because, while, since, although

7. Preposition
A word used indicating the relationship between a noun or pronoun to another word. There are numerous prepositions in English used in a variety of manners.
E. g. : in, until, of, from, after, under, beyond, across, toward

8. Interjection
A single word used to express strong emotion.
E. g. : Wow! Ah! Oh! No!
